“Getting Out of the Norm – Marketing Cattle”

27 January 2017 - Cedar City, UT

Local rancher Dallas Gale embarked on a journey of knowledge and experimentation. Knowing that cattle markets are down, and marketing cattle is no easy task Gale used ranching connection, and those connections, connections, as well as what’s out there on the internet to research what has been done that innovative in the way of cattle marketing. This research lead him to a few new and innovative ideas of his own to market cattle in a different way than “the norm” and give ranchers more options of cattle sales. Gale has been doing this research for months, but the heart of this experimental marketing took place in November and December of 2016. Gale, being an entrepreneurial-minded young man decided to actually hold 3 calves back from normal sales in an attempt to market them in different ways.

Gale used ways of marketing that he felt would step out of the norm but were also plausible for beef producers in Southern Utah. He taught consumers what goes into the beef production in efforts to add value to the beef product offering. He reached new and untapped markets that Southern Utah markets don’t reach, in an attempt to reach people that are willing to pay more for the quality products. And, he developed a way to market homegrown beef in bulk to the local market in an attempt to help people realize that they can buy better beef, in bulk, at a cheaper priced, from locals instead of just going to Walmart. These new marketing strategies that Gale used proved to be successful through either cattle sales or successful by opening the minds of ranchers and consumers alike of the different opportunities in the beef industry.

Gale got his motivation from working on his family operation, the Desert Rose Ranch. The Desert Rose Ranch is located just south of Cedar City, UT and is open for helping people learn about what all goes into the hamburgers, roasts, and steaks that we eat. Owner and operator, father of Dallas Gale, Chris Gale vows to continue to raise cattle and run his ranch in a “traditional, safe, and respectable way”. The Desert Rose Ranch producers mostly black Angus beef cattle, and “hard working sons and daughter” said Chris Gale.

Dallas Gale opens up new ways and ideas to stimulate the beef cattle industry. He is a force to be reckoned with, we can and should all follow his example in the traditions, and the desires to do what’s best for ranching and the beef industry as a whole. There are ideas, that have not yet been discovered, join the Gale and the Desert Rose Ranch in finding those ways to help us all, in the beef industry, grow. ###
